THE FODOR HAMLET PHENOMENON |
REVIEWS 2 SHAKESPEARE? ANYTHING BUT… It’s quite obvious that the makers of this film know nothing about the beauty of Shakespeare and why it has remained popular for so many years. The acting’s appalling, lines mumbled, even stuttered, the beautiful cadences totally ruined. To try and make up for the poorness of the line delivery the director’s inserted a host of gimmicks, as though there was something wrong with the play in the first place. Such silliness as having men’s roles played by women, apparently just so to hint at undercurrents of more personal relationships just doesn’t work, and distracts from the central theme of the play – Hamlet’s confusion and depth. I understand that this version of Hamlet was shot to appeal to people who aren’t familiar with Shakespeare. True, they may watch it. They may even like it. The sad thing is though that afterwards they still won’t be familiar with Shakespeare.
